about

Hercynia silva is the Latin name for the dense forest that stretched over ancient Germania - the area extending from the Rhine River, through to present day Ukraine. As well as being a barrier to the conquering Roman armies, the forest was a source of wonder and fear and was reputedly home to unusual flora, fauna and mythological creatures.

Our Hercynia silva is a unique shop in Clifton Hill, Melbourne, where you will find for sale a range of archaic and modern hand crafted objects. Our stock includes the following: Custom made, antique and vintage furniture, sculpture, kitchen ware, jewellery and musical instruments.

While our focus is on objects in wood, the common thread in our collection is the unmistakable character of the hand crafted object.

Hercynia silva was established by artist and carpenter Michael Conole and graphic designer Viveka de Costa. Michael has been working as a furniture maker and sculptor in wood for over ten years. More information about his past work can be found here.

We are always interested in viewing and considering the work of artists for sale in the store. Please direct any enquiries here.
